Please help our
Poitou Donkeys
 |
|
We imported our 5
Poitou in November 2007. A Grade “A” pregnant jenny called “Olive”,
and grade “B” jennies called “India” & “Opaline”, with her 2 year
old daughter “Sahel”, and yearling son “Tweed” - both grade “B”. |

Some
were in
quite poor condition on arrival, and it wasn’t very long before we
had our first problems.
“Sahel” started finding it increasingly difficult to walk, stumbling
more and more, and started to show signs of great pain. The
diagnosis for this was contracted tendons, so she was booked in for
a tendonectomy at Newmarket.
What followed could not have been predicted. The onset of stress
induced laminitis in her mother “Opaline”. The bond between mother
and daughter was much stronger than first thought, and the removal
of her first foal “Sahel” from whom she had never been parted, was
too much for her.

The most recent
and tragic event for the breed, for us, and for the mothers, was the
sad loss of two female foals. The first to lose her foal was “Olive”
at 2 days old, due to a hole in the heart - a defect with which she
was born with. Then “Opaline” lost her foal after only a few hours,
due to being a “dummy foal” - a foal which would never have lived,
as he had a swelling in the brain in the womb or at birth. Both were
unpreventable, but tragic.
Our Poitou donkeys are all now on the long road to recovery, and
returning to full health, but we need your help to get them there.
We have received many expensive but necessary veterinary bills that
we are finding increasingly difficult to pay.
