Tayra, Tayra, burning bright...

The Tayra is one of the unusual species you can find at Hamerton. This large, active diurnal 'mustelid' is a relative of the Martens, Weasels and Ferrets. Very rare in Zoos it is slowly becoming more often seen due to breeding successes by two zoos, ZieZoo in Holland and Hamerton Zoo Park in the UK. Our adult pair have had no less than six litters and have proved to be fantastic parents. Many babies have been reared and are now living in the Czech Republic, Russia and France. The latest young male born at Hamerton has just moved today to Exmoor Zoo in Devon. He is seen in the above picture with his mother and sister.
